Quite often, it is interesting to discover the various dynamics of a person’s life that earn the most care and attention. Although Carter cared little about his future, his family, or any other person for that matter, he took a great amount of care in ensuring the cleanliness of the mugs and glassware in his bar. More often than not, Carter would run each glass through the washer twice before meticulously examining each one. Only after passing Carter’s strict eye examine could a glass gain the approval necessary to be used again.

Many of the coworkers at the sports bar joked that Carter was more selective with his beer mugs than he was with his women. Carter never denied such ribbings. Instead, he would simply shrug his shoulders and offer a generic response in jest.

“Hey man, I’m just trying to do my part. Who wants a dirty mug for their beer after a long day?”

Of course, just when such a comment appeared to be selfless, Carter would amend his statement just enough to leave people shaking their heads.

“I mean, if I just sat through two hours of church, I’d want a clean glass of booze, too!”

Most on staff believed Carter actually meant such comments, which was what made him frustrating, relatable, and acceptable to them. However, a select few realized Carter was almost always putting up a well-disguised front. In fact, it was the little things, like the bar mugs and the occasional free appetizer or brew that Carter would offer to people, that seemed to give him an unusual ability to not stress or lose his temper like many in the food-service industry regularly struggled to overcome. It was gestures such as these that proved Carter was not completely impervious to kind acts of service, but rather was accustomed to sharing them. One co-worker in particular named Melanie largely believed Carter was a much different person than most believed.

Melanie, though oblivious to Carter’s past, was convinced that behind his layers of crudeness and womanizing was a man who had the capacity to be incredibly loving and loyal. She also happened to find him unbelievably attractive. The two of them had worked together for nearly three years, and though Melanie acted as if Carter was just another co-worker to her, she had been keeping a keen eye on him lately. As well, Melanie—once again unaware of Carter’s comfort in his current position—believed Carter had the capacity to grow into much more than simply a bar tender.

Carter was scheduled to leave roughly an hour earlier than Melanie, but as the crowd began to die down, she made a progressive effort to infuse herself into his post-work plans.

“So, guys, what are your plans? Where is the nightcap?”

“Honestly, I’m thinking I might go home. Tips weren’t great today, even for a double. That church crowd sure knows how to stiff the help.”

“All the more reason to shake it off! Come on, Carter. You and I both know you aren’t going home without getting a drink somewhere.
